What topics will we cover?Natural and man-made Disasters. We will take you through preparing for, coping with and recovering from natural and man-made disasters. We are fortunate to have Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, (U.S. Army, Ret.), with us as our Keynote Speaker. General Honoré commanded the Joint Task Force for the Hurricane Katrina recovery and rescue effort in New Orleans. He will speak on "See first, understand first: Leadership and Preparedness in the 21st Century." Sheriff Rich Stanek of Hennepin County (Minneapolis, MN) commands a department of more than 800 sworn and civilian employees "...and is known for his thoughtful leadership and ability to see the big picture. When the I-35W Bridge collapsed over the Mississippi River (during rush hour traffic) in August, 2007, Sheriff Stanek had the chance to put his and his department's personnel and training to the test, as well as to test skills derived from National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) compliance." At the NLETC, Sheriff Stanek will lead a discussion on the recovery and rescue efforts of his department, including the ensuing investigation of the bridge collapse. Mass Shootings.
Unfortunately, it is happening throughout the country...on college campuses, in city and town shopping malls, in office buildings and right next door - to you! Col. Steven Flaherty, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police will lead a comprehensive review of the mass shooting at Virginia Tech from a law enforcement perspective. Scott Barker, Deputy Director of the Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center for the U.S. Dept. of Justice will speak at the NLETC on DOJ's Critical Incident Response and Disaster Recovery Assistance software, Incident Commander simulation training tool, SWAT standards and the School Safety Generator Plan. This class will also cover several of the Public Safety technology programs of the U.S. Department of Justice/National Institute of Justice and how public safety agencies can leverage this work as well as get assistance for their technology endeavors. Counter-terrorism and Intelligence Gathering.
Eric Kleinsmith, an expert in the counter-intelligence field from Lockheed Martin, will offer case studies and information on counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering efforts in the U.S. and what software and other information is available for use by local, state and federal agencies.
